Each year, nearly a thousand fans gather with their lawn chairs and blankets to enjoy a wonderful catered picnic dinner and relax on this beautiful country hillside for a concert by the outstanding Glenelg Jazz Ensemble. This year, the band will be joined by local performing artists, the Junkyard Saints!
Proceeds benefit the Glenelg Marching Unit Boosters and help fund sending the Glenelg Jazz Ensemble to perform at prestigious jazz festivals, both domestic and abroad. The ensemble has had the pleasure of performing at the world-renowned Montreux and North Sea Jazz Festivals, Jazz à Vienne, and the Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival, among others.
The Glenelg Jazz Ensemble, Symphonic Band, and Marching Unit have earned a reputation for extraordinary musicianship, both domestically and abroad, for more than four decades. The tradition continues with this year's program maintaining remarkable levels of quality and achievement.
The band is led by Christopher Winters who is, himself, a graduate of Glenelg High. Mr. Winters was a member of the Glenelg Jazz Ensemble from 1990-1994 under the direction of Barry Enzman. During a particularly strong year while was a student, Chris was a member of the Glenelg Jazz Ensemble when it was selected by jazz legend, Maynard Ferguson, to be featured in an educational video he produced. The group subsequently toured Europe in 1993, playing at the North Sea and Montreux Jazz Festivals.
Over the past four decades, aspiring musicians in the Glenelg band have benefited greatly from participation in these prestigious jazz festivals, both domestic and abroad, and the mentoring they have received from brilliant musicians such as Maynard Ferguson and Chris Vadala, among others.
In that spirit, the Glenelg Jazz Ensemble is proud to present Jazz Under The Stars 2018 – a glorious celebration of the extraordinary GHS Music Program and its commitment to excellence.
Recipients of Washington Area Music Association's 2006 WAMMIE Award for Artist of the Year and consistently Best Roots Rock Group, Baltimore-based JUNKYARD SAINTS have performed with such notables as BUCKWHEAT ZYDECO, THE IGUANAS, MARCIA BALL, and CHUCK BROWN. Bandleader and GHS Alum, Brian Simms, was voted Musician of the Year 2009, and nominated for a 2009 Grammy.

In addition to being a fun evening with great food and wonderful music, Jazz Under the Stars is also an extremely important fundraiser for the Glenelg High School Music Department. It helps pay for instruments, new marching band uniforms, and other costs not covered by the county.
The Glenelg Jazz Ensemble has played at several prestigious jazz festivals in Europe including the world-renowned Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, the Freiberg JazzHaus in Germany, and the Jazz à Vienne and Nice Jazz Festivals in France. Our wonderful sponsors help make these dream performances possible for our very talented group of young musicians.
